Anniversary of the liberation of the Republic of Bulgaria has been traditionally followed by ceremonies held all over the country. Special ceremonies are organized in towns that were sites of major battles in the struggle for liberation.
This date has been celebrated since 1880, when Russian Tsar Alexander II was crowned, and in 1988 it was declared as Day of Liberation. It became national holiday in 1987.
3rd March has been included in the list of national holidays of the Republic of Bulgaria by 1990 Decree.
