At the Meeting of Secretary Generals, which is to be held in Cyprus Parliament this year, the country which presides over the European Union in the second half of 2012, the Progress Report compared to conclusions of the previous Conference of Speakers of Parliaments will be considered, especially relating the first Interparliamentary Conference on Common Foreign And Security Policy and Common Security and Defence Policy. Secretary Generals will also discuss annual report on the work of Interparliamentary EU Information Exchange (IPEX), after which the new IPEX Committee will be elected.
The meeting represents preparation for the Conference of Speakers of the EU Parliaments, scheduled for 22nd and 23rd April of this year. Conference of Speakers of parliaments, consisting of representatives of national parliaments of the EU member states and Speaker of the European Parliament, aims at promoting the role of parliaments and overseeing the coordination of interparliamentary activities. The Conference represents forum for exchange of opinion, information and experience among speakers of parliaments, on topics regarding role and organization of parliamentary functions, promotion of research activities and joint acting.
