The President of the Parliament of Montenegro Mr. Ranko Krivokapić, upon the invitation of the Ambassador Mr. Mitja Drobnič, Head of the Delegation of the EU in Montenegro, was a guest of the regular monthly meeting of the Head of Missions of the EU member countries in Montenegro.
Topics of the meeting were exchange of opinions regarding current political situation in Montenegro after parliamentary elections, held on 14th October, so as relations between Montenegro and the EU.
In the opening statement, the President Krivokapić gave the overview of the situation of the Montenegro’s political scene in the post-election period, and information on activities regarding complete constitution of the Parliament of Montenegro and expectations regarding the election of new Government of Montenegro after appointing the Prime Minister-designate.
The President Krivokapić thanked the Ambassadors of the EU member states who continuously supported Montenegro in the EU integration process and opening negotiations with the EU.
While talking about the activities of the Parliament of Montenegro, Mr. Krivokapić said that the Parliament continuously improved its position in all domains of parliamentary work. He said that the Parliament was highly assessed in annual reports of the European Commission owing to the joint efforts of all parliamentarians, where continuous and dynamic development of Montenegrin parliamentarism was noted.
The President Krivokapić said that the Parliament of Montenegro would become key political institution of the European integration of Montenegro.
Control hearings became inevitable practice in work of the Parliament’s working bodies and mechanism through which the Parliament conducted and improved its supervisory function. For the first time Constitutional Institute of parliamentary investigation was activated by adopting the Law on Parliamentary Investigation which would fully regulate this field, said Mr. Krivokapić.
Mr. Krivikapić stated that the Parliament, in the new Convocation, would also further improve its transparency and continue its high quality cooperation with civil sector, in the aim of strengthening the citizens’ confidence.
He expressed an expectation that the role of the opposition would be stronger with the implementation of new provisions of the Rules of Procedure and the changes of it were recently consensually adopted in the Parliament.
While answering the Ambassadors’ questions, Mr. Krivokapić expressed an expectation that the new Government would continue European and Euro-Atlantic integration policy, conducting reforms with special attention to the rule of law and creating conditions for economic growth and improvement of the living standard of citizens.
Expressing gratitude to President Krivokapić for detailed analysis of the current political processes, Ambassador Drobnič proposed that the Parliament of Montenegro, in particular the Committee on European Integration, and the Delegation of the EU should cooperate closely in further period, taking into account the new stage of the Montenegrin path towards the EU.
