Announcement regarding the statement of the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Montenegro, Mr Andrei Nesterenko

Statement by the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Montenegro, Mr Andrei Nesterenko, on the manner of making a decision on membership of Montenegro to NATO is not an example of good diplomatic practice and could with reason be interpreted as interference in the internal affairs of Montenegro

Montenegro is a sovereign state which has its own Constitution and laws, regulating the question of Montenegro's membership to international organizations.

The Parliament of Montenegro is constitutionally empowered to make a decision on full membership of Montenegro to NATO Alliance, and nobody has the right to discredit it if one respected the will of the citizens of Montenegro and its Constitution.

Montenegro is committed to building the best bilateral relations with the Russian Federation, but any suggestion on how Montenegro needs to make decisions concerning the direction of its state policy is unacceptable, including the manner of joining NATO.

The decision on the manner of accession to NATO, Montenegro will make in a constitutional and legal manner, taking care exclusively about the interests of its citizens.
