President of the Parliament receives representatives of the Association of Persons with Disabilities

The interlocutors discussed current issues and possible models for solving the problems that persons with disabilities faced

The President of the Parliament of Montenegro today met Mr Milisav Korać, Executive Director of the Union of Associations of Parents of Children and Youth with Disabilities "Our Initiative”, Mr Darko Mijušković, President of the Alliance of Organisation of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Mr Danilo Popović and Ms Azra Mučić, representatives of the Union of Civil War Invalids.

At the meeting, the interlocutors discussed current issues, challenges, difficulties and possible models for solving the problems that persons with disabilities faced They pointed out numerous prejudices that persons with disabilities faced, particularly when it comes to employment. President of the Parliament of Montenegro Mr Ranko Krivokapić said that he expected a further progress on the path towards achieving better living conditions for persons with disabilities.

Institutional respect of the adopted laws is the responsibility of all, because in that manner we show that the improvement of conditions for the smooth functioning of persons with disabilities is a priority. When it comes to the Parliament of Montenegro, this institution is a positive example of the initiative for creating conditions for better living standard of people with disabilities. The first phase of the project has been completed, meaning that the Parliament of Montenegro provided the following: the inclined platform (lift) in the building of the Parliament of Montenegro, the entrance to the Parliament of Montenegro for the unimpeded access of disabled people and a platform for access of people with disabilities to the Plenary Hall, while the conditions for the smooth functioning of persons with disabilities are also fulfilled with the construction of toilets adapted to their needs. Additionally, the Parliament of Montenegro has adapted its web site for use by persons with hearing impairments.

The interlocutors emphasised that previous cooperation was good, and that achieving better results in contributing to the creation of better status of persons with disabilities was possible through improvement of the legislation.

Additionally, it was concluded that it was necessary to work on improvement of the legislation in the period to come, and interlocutors emphasised that the parliamentary initiative and work on developing and facilitating the lives of persons with disabilities was very positive in particular cases.
