During their visit to Athens, the students and teachers visited the Hellenic Parliament, where they were received by the Secretary General of the Hellenic Parliament Mr Athanassios Papaioannou, who spoke on the importance of the parliament as an institution, as well as Montenegro’s EU accession. Apart from the Parliament, there were organised visits for the students to the Acropolis, and the Acropolis museum, settlement Plaka, National Archaeological Museum, and other historic and cultural sites, as well as a visit to the Zoo.
The visit was organised and funded by the Parliament of Montenegro and the Hellenic Parliament, following the meeting of the Secretary General of the Parliament of Montenegro and the Secretary General of the Hellenic Parliament, held in May 2013, in Podgorica. During the official visit to the Parliament of Montenegro in May, Mr Papaioannou had the opportunity to visit “Democracy Workshops”, and to talk to the students of this school, who on that day participated in the workshop titled “Democracy and Parliament”, after which he invited them to visit Athens.
The project “Democracy Workshops”, which is organised by the Parliament of Montenegro in cooperation with the ERSTE Foundation and NGO Forum Youth and Informal Education, is designed for the students of primary schools, with the aim of stimulating interest among young people in politics and democratic processes, and enabling them to promote their knowledge on the representative democracy, the work of MPs and the Parliament as an institution, as well as the role of a citizen in the political system. Since the beginning of the project, the workshops were attended by a total of 3,607 students from 40 primary schools all over Montenegro.
