60th Annual Session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in The Hague – days two and three

Meetings of the Committee on the Civil Dimension of Security, Defence and Security Committee, Economics and Security Committee, Science and Technology Committee, Political Committee and the Standing Committee held

At the meeting of the Committee on the Civil Dimension of Security, among other things, members discussed achievements and challenges of the political transition in Afghanistan, fight against terrorism, the European choice of Ukraine and geo-strategic and political consequences of that choice, and the refugee crisis in Syria and its impact on the region.

Current political events in Afghanistan - a critical crossroads for NATO and the international community, ways to improve the concept of smart defense and the need to create a platform to meet the development of new technologies (a case study of drones), and regional and global consequences of the civil war in Syria and the steps to be taken by NATO in order to stabilize the situation in this country, were the topics of the meeting of the Defence and Security Committee.

The discussion on the meeting of the Economics and Security Committee was about negotiating the transatlantic trade and investment partnership, economic dimensions of a changing US and European approach to Asia and security and economic developments in the Sahel

At a meeting of the Political Committee, the discussion was about security ongoing at NATO’s South‑Eastern border, their implications for transatlantic co-operation and coursesof action on NATO after 2014.

In addition, special attention was paid at the meeting to NATO partnerships and open-door policy of the Alliance. Draft report of the Subcommittee on NATO partnerships was reviewed, presented by the rapporteur Rasa Jukneviciene, who stressed that the Alliance should keep the trend of open doors to new members.

On this occasion, the increased progress of Montenegro was noted, as the newest independent state among the aspirants and it was pointed out that recent achievements in reforming the security sector, together with active engagement in ISAF Montenegro, brought Montenegro closer to eventual membership in NATO. The decisions of the Summit in Wales that by the end of 2015 it will have been decided on Montenegro's readiness to join the Alliance, was also emphasized.

Head and members of the standing delegation of the Parliament of Montenegro to the NATO PA Mr Mevludin Nuhodžić, Mr Borislav Banović and Mr Branko Radulović, participate in the work of the gathering.

60th Annual Session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, being held in The Hague, Kingdom of the Netherlands, from 21 to 24 November 2014, gathered over 350 parliamentarians from the North-Atlantic Alliance and partner countries.
