Chairperson and members of the Security and Defence Committee meet with the Head of Western Balkans Division at the European External Action Service Mr Jonas Jonsson

The meeting was attended by the following: Mr Jonas Jonsson, Head of Western Balkans Division at the European External Action Service, Mr Herbert Pribitzer, desk officer for Montenegro, Mr Mitja Drobnič, Head of the EU Delegation to Montenegro, Mr Alberto Cammarata, Head of the Political Sector to EU Delegation, Ms Annalisa Giansanti, Political Advisor at the EU Delegation, Chairperson and members of the Committee Mr Mevludin Nuhodžić, Mr Radivoje Nikčević, Mr Luiđ Ljubo Škrelja, Mr Suljo Mustafić, Mr Vasilije Lalošević, Mr Velizar Kaluđerović and Nebojša Medojević.

During the meeting, the important role of the Parliament, as umbrella institution in creating the adequate legislative framework, was emphasises as well as its responsibility in effective and successful implementation of the parliamentary oversight.  It was stressed that in the processes of European integration Montenegro had been making efforts in order to fulfil its European agenda in best manner and to demonstrate to European Union member states its responsibility and seriousness in implementation of the set of obligations. In addition, it was emphasised that Montenegro have been sending a clear message to international community that - on the basis of European values and in the following integration phase – it was ready to be a constructive partner to all regional countries and wider and also a promoter of common European values, with special reference to strengthening of capacities in the sector of defence and security and strengthening parliamentary control of those structures.

Guests were introduced with the fact that – in light of European and Euro-Atlantic integration process – the Committee got informed on findings from the European Commission Report on monitoring results in fight against organised crime and corruption in line with the standards from chapters 23 and 24, as interested body, also considering reports on Montenegro’s progress in the Membership Action Plan (MAP). In addition, guests had an opportunity to hear different positions of representatives of political parties on Montenegro accession to NATO, manner for reaching the decision, as well as possible solutions for strengthening the public support in that context.

It was jointly assessed that Montenegro was one of the leading countries in the region in terms of European integration and constructive actor in regional relationships as well, hence confirming its clear commitment for implementing the overall reforms, with the aim of more efficient democratisation of society and raising the level of standard of living of all citizens – and integration processes have been the best model for the progress in that sense.
