Members of the Committee on European Integration met today with Assistant Secretary General of NATO for Political Affairs and Security Policy Dirk Brengelman and on that occasion exchanged opinions on the issue of Montenegros membership in NATO, pointing to the public opinion regarding the state entering into this Alliance.

The Assistant Secretary General of NATO for Political Affairs and Security Policy said that the EU and NATO integration are complementary, emphasizing the importance of rule of law as one of the basic conditions for membership in both processes.  Since NATO alliance is not just military, but also political and security procedure organization, it provides new members with economic benefits by increasing the level of foreign investment, said Mr. Brengelman. Speaking of regional cooperation, Mr. Brengelman praised Montenegro in terms of its active and constructive role in regional processes, and highlighted the efforts in terms of conducting reforms arising from framework of Membership Action Plan (MAP), which will contribute to the efficient preparation of Montenegro for NATO accession.

The Chairman of the Committee Mr. Slaven Radunović introduced the guest with the current situation when it comes to Montenegros NATO accession, emphasizing the existence of different opinions of parties regarding countrys NATO accession, as well as the manner of making decisions on membership in mentioned organization.

It was jointly assessed the importance of informing citizens about the activities of the Alliance, to appropriate promotion of  NATO integration obtain higher level of support to the public, necessary for legitimate decision on membership in NATO Alliance.
