Chairperson of the Committee on European Integration Mr Slaven Radunović today held a meeting with Mr Aleksandar Saša Zeković, President of the Council for the civil control of the work of police.
The Committee Chairperson presented the specific role of this parliamentary body which continuously monitors the negotiation process. Mr Radunović emphasised the importance of the Council for the civil control of the work of police in securing the rule of law, and recognised the need for this collective ombudsman body to be maximally available and establish close cooperation with citizens of Montenegro.
President of the Council for the civil control of the work of police presented the experiences and contribution of this body in building the police as public, democratically controlled service, whose primary role is to uphold and enforce the law impartially.
The meeting was focused on sharing views on accountability and capacity of the police in the European integration context of Montenegro, and in particular the negotiation chapter 23 - Judiciary and fundamental rights and 24 - Justice, freedom and security. Both sides agreed that the accession to the EU was extremely important and complex process and that internal reforms were crucial in contributing to the speed and the quality of the negotiating process.
Interlocutors agreed to organise a joint roundtable discussion in the Parliament of Montenegro, which will bring together all relevant social actors, in order to discuss argumentatively and competently on the capacity and enhancement of the performance of the police for law enforcement.
