Meeting of Representatives of the Committee on Human Rights and Freedoms with the UNICEF Representative to Montenegro

Chair of the Committee on Human Rights and Freedoms Halil Duković PhD and Deputy Chair Ljiljana Đurašković PhD held meeting today with the UNICEF Representative to Montenegro Benjamin Perks. 

Chairman of the Committee on Human Rights and Freedoms expressed gratitude to UNICEF Representative to Montenegro for continued cooperation and support UNICEF provides for this Committee, expressing a desire for continued and improved cooperation. He stated that Mr. Perks is very familiar with the activities implemented by the Committee on Human Rights and Freedoms aimed at improving the state and rights of children in Montenegro, with special emphasis on the rights of children with disabilities, because he participated in numerous meetings and other activities realized by the Committee.

UNICEF Representative to Montenegro stated that the overall situation and situation of children in Montenegro is improved, although there are differences among children, depending on whether they are from the north or the south of Montenegro, from poor or rich family. If a child is from the wealthy family, it is ten times more likely that a child will attend the kindergarten and 20% more likely that a child from the south of a country will attend the kindergarten than the child from the north. He pointed out that UNICEF cooperates with the Ministry of Education in this field in order to increase the number of children attending pre-school.

UNICEF Representative to Montenegro emphasized that the cooperation with the Parliament of Montenegro is very serious for them, especially with the Committee on Human Rights and Freedoms with which the cooperation is excellent, and expressed willingness to continue it. He suggested that UNICEF should present the work of the Committee in the Parliament in September, especially in organizing public debates, and activities regarding promotion of foster care and the Children's Home in Bijela.

Chair of the Committee on Human Rights and Freedoms expressed readiness to continue cooperation with the UNICEF, aimed at improving the situation of children in Montenegro. He pointed to the particularly acute problem of children from Roma families where it is necessary to give contribution to the improvement of their position through joint and coordinated efforts of all relevant entities. 

Interlocutors expressed satisfaction with today's meeting, the current cooperation between the Committee on Human Rights and Freedoms and the UNICEF Representative to Montenegro, hoping that this cooperation would continue in the future through the implementation of specific activities and projects.
