Members of the Committee on International Relations and Emigrants of the Parliament of Montenegro met today with Ms. Ásta R. Jóhannesdóttir, the Speaker of the Parliament of Iceland, Mr. Jörundur Kristjánsson, advisor on International Affairs in the Parliament of Iceland and H.E. Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Iceland, Mr. Gunnar Snorri Gunnarsson.
Chairperson of the Committee on International Relations and Emigrants Mr. Miodrag Vuković Docent PhD informed the distinguished Speaker of the Parliament of Iceland Ms. Jóhannesdóttir on activities of the newly established Committee on International Relations and Emigrants. According to the amendments to the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament of Montenegro, newly established Committee deals, inter alia, with improving and protection of the rights of displaced persons from Montenegro who live in other countries.
During the conversation between Mr. Vuković and the Speaker Jóhannesdóttir, parliamentary diplomacy was pointed out as an important segment of acting in European and Euro-Atlantic integration. Chairperson Vuković emphasized that the Committee worked on the improvement of cooperation between the Parliament of Montenegro and other parliaments at bilateral and multilateral level within the friendship groups and through participation at numerous gatherings of international organizations and regional initiatives.
Chairperson Vuković introduced the distinguished guest that the process of establishing friendship groups of the Parliament of Montenegro and other parliaments was ongoing, thus the intensive cooperation between the Parliament of Montenegro and Iceland was expected to be achieved soon, bearing on mind that Iceland could provide significant support to Montenegro aimed at the transfer of knowledge and experience in the negotiation process.
Chairperson Vuković expressed willingness for improving the bilateral relations between Montenegro and Iceland, considering that two countries shared joint perspective for membership to the EU. In that regard, the interlocutors emphasized intensifying of political contacts at the high level between the countries. The interlocutors stressed that these two small European countries in the following period should improve cooperation in all areas of mutual interest.
Speaker of the Parliament of Iceland Ms. Ásta R. Jóhannesdóttir spoke on the importance of establishing the close cooperation between the Parliament and the Government in the process of European integration, emphasizing the role of the Parliament in the negotiation process.
It was agreed at the meeting for the future cooperation between the Parliament of Montenegro and Parliament of Iceland to be continued through intensive cooperation and provision of expert help to Montenegro.
The meeting was an exceptional opportunity to exchange opinions on current issues in the process of European integration.
