The Committee on Health, Labour and Social Welfare today held a small meeting devoted to fight against breast cancer. In addition to Committee members, the meeting was attended by Dr Nebojša Crnogorac, Director of the Clinic for Oncology and Radiotherapy at the Clinical Centre and Dr Sanja Simović, Assistant Minister of Health for control and improving the quality of health care.
Through presentation, Dr Nebojša Crnogorac acquainted members of the Committee with prevalence of the disease, the causes of its origin and possibilities of prevention. He pointed out that the breast cancer, together with lung cancer, was the most common malignancy in women and constitutes one fourth of all malignant cancers. He recommended the following for the purpose of early detection of breast cancer: breast self-examination, annual medical examinations and mammograms. He said that the main cause of breast cancer was the aging of population.
Committee members supported the proposal by Dr Crnogorac that the control system should be established for the purpose of obtaining precise data on number of annual mammogram examinations and obtained results.
