Inter-parliamentary meeting "Situation in the Mediterranean and the need for a holistic approach to migration" ended in Brussels

Interparliamentary meeting of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament and competent committees of national parliaments, was held at the premises of the European Parliament in Brussels, on 23 September, with the topic "Situation in the Mediterranean and the need for a holistic approach to migration".

The opening remarks at the meeting were delivered by Mr Claude Moraes, Chairman of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament, as well as co-rapporteurs of the LIBE Strategic report on the situation in the Mediterranean and the need for a a holistic approach to migration of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, Ms Roberta Metsola and Ms Kashetu Kyenge. Following the introductory speeches, the floor was given to the representatives of the Luxembourg Parliament.

The Session I was entitled "The role of Justice and Home Affairs Agencies in the hot spot concept", which provided participation of: Mr Dimitris Avramopoulos, Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship; EASO representative (European Asylum Support Office); Eurojust representative (European Union's Judicial Cooperation Unit), as well as representatives of the Europol, Frotex and the Agency for Fundamental Rights.

"Addressing migration at the national and local level" was the topic of the Session II of the Interparliamentary meeting, opened by Ms Roberta Metsola and Ms Kashetu Kyenge, Co-Rapporteurs of the LIBE Strategic report on the situation in the Mediterranean and the need for a holistic approach to migration of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs. After that, the discussio n was aboutprogram interventions of chairpersons, or rapporteurs of parliaments, who carried out or have recently been conducting investigations or reports on migration.

Mr François Decoster, Committee of the Regions’ Chair of the CIVEX Commission and Rapporteur for the upcoming Opinion on the European Agenda on Migration, gave an overview and analysis from his own perspective. At the end of this Session, dedicated to addressing migration at the national and local level, presentations were delivered by Mr Stefano Mallia and Mr Cristian Pîrvulescu, European Economic and Social Committee’s Co-Rapporteurs for the upcoming Opinion on the EU Agenda on Migration.

Time after both sessions was dedicated to questions and answers, which included participation of parliamentarians of both European and national parliaments. This part of the agenda provided for the oportunity for the representatives of our Parliament to take part in discussion.

At the closing part of the meeting, participants had the oportunity to hear conclusions by Ms Roberta Metsola and Ms Kashetu Kyenge, CoRapporteurs of the LIBE Strategic report on the situation in the Mediterranean and the need for a holistic approach to migration of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs.

The meeting was organized by the European Parliament, with the support of the Directorate for relations with national parliaments.

Delegation of the Parliament of Montenegro was composed of MP Mr Šefkija Murić, member of the Committee on Political System, Judiciary and Administration, and the Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Human Rights and Freedoms, Ms Ljiljana Đurašković.
