The President Saakashvili welcomed the decision of the president Krivokapić to send an observer mission of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly to observe the presidential elections in that country. In that context he expressed expectations that, in other areas as well, the OSCE PA would continue to support Georgia on its further reformist path and democratisation of the country.
He also informed the President Krivokapić on the political situation in the country, pointing out the key political and democratic challenges that Georgia was facing, emphasising that the priorities of his country were to become a member of the EU and NATO.
President Krivokapić emphasised that the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly would like to continue to play an active role in the Kavkaz region and with its engagement to help solve specific political issues that were troubling that area.
“As the President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, I have decided to send a mission that will monitor the presidential elections in Georgia, which I believe would be held in accordance with the international standards. Thus your country would show that is intensively making progress in implementing the necessary reforms, through dedication to the OSCE values”, said Mr Krivokapić.
President Krivokapić noticed certain similarities between Montenegro and Georgia, which were being manifested via the identical priorities regarding the EU and NATO, but also via similar challenges that the two countries were facing in the process of their full democratic maturing.
In the conversation with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Ms Maia Panjikidze it was concluded that the two countries may intensify cooperation within the European and Euro-Atlantic integration, having in mind the progress of both countries in those processes, and the fact that Montenegro would soon be opening Chapters 23 and 24, while Georgia should soon be signing the EU Association Agreement.
President Krivokapić also held separate meetings with the political representatives of the parliamentary majority and the opposition in the Georgian Parliament, where they analysed the political climate of the current election campaign of the presidential elections. The representatives of the political parties informed the president of OSCE PA on the problems that they were facing during the campaign, and which could influence the democracy of the election process.
