President of the Parliament of Montenegro Mr Darko Pajović received Mr Goran Radenović, executive and program director of TV Pink M. The motive for the meeting was an open letter which Mr Radenović has sent to the President of Montenegro, President of the Parliament and Minister of Culture in the Government of Montenegro. The letter expresses a serious concern over the pressures and sense of threat that Pink M and its editorial staff are exposed to by certain interest groups and media groups.
The President of the Parliament of Montenegro said that “unfortunately, in politically divided society there is a problem when it comes to the media and their functioning”.
- Physical endangerment of journalists and the premises where they work as well as their personal discrediting deserve unequivocal condemnation, while equal treatment for all cases of endangering the free work of the media is the responsibility of the entire society, Mr Pajović reminded.
The President of the Parliament stated that open or disguised pressure on editorial offices and journalists point to the need of raising the level of democratic political culture.
At the meeting, they also discussed the fact that professional and ethical standards oblige the media to be responsible in their editorial policy, whereat the Parliament of Montenegro undoubtedly provides institutional support to their free work. This is evidenced, among other things, by the work of the Committee on monitoring the investigation of cases of endangering security of journalists, whose constitutive meeting was chaired by Mr Darko Pajović.
