Pajović: By pro-Western course of the state to strengthening the rule of law

In the afternoon part of the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament, which is being held in Strasbourg, President of the Parliament of Montenegro Mr Darko Pajović met Deputy Speaker of the British House of Commons Ms Eleanor Laing and President of the Senate of the Republic of Italy Mr Pietro Grasso.

The Deputy Speaker of the British House of Commons announced good news from her country with regard to the ratification of NATO Accession Protocol for Montenegro.  The interlocutor also showed great interest for political model of the Agreement on Fair and Free Elections and the Government of Electoral Trust.

The President of Montenegrin Parliament explained reasons for conditional support to the Government, and showed - on the example of the Parliament - the validity of the decision of the opposition to take part in preparation of fair and free elections.

At the meeting with President of the Senate of the Republic of Italy Mr Pietro Grasso, former anti-Mafia prosecutor of the Republic of Italy, they spoke about permanently good relations of the two states and possibilities for further enlargement of parliamentary cooperation. President Pajović stressed the need for using experiences of the Republic of Italy in all fields of social and political life.

Furthermore, during the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament of CoE member states, the President of Montenegrin Parliament took part in the session titled: “  “National Parliaments and the Council of Europe:  Together promoting democracy, human rights and the rule of law”, and on that occasion said, among other things, said:

- In modern European history, the Western civilisation is based on democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Montenegro is striving to be a part of that civilisation through the process of European and Euro-Atlantic integration. Respect of basic principles of the state of law and the rule of law is one of civilizational standards today and a kind of ticket for entering the circle of civilised states. Not only quality, but also legitimacy of the whole legal system of a state, today highly depends on the consistent application of the rule of law, Mr Pajović said.

- We know that there are many challenges and a lot of work in front of us with regard to strengthening the rule of law and establishing functioning democracy. In that process, we are very thankful to our European and NATO partners for the support they have been constantly providing to us for the purpose of achieving this goal. Also, let me emphasise that by establishing the Government of electoral trust, Montenegro has shown democratic maturity to resolve political challenges at the table, alone, without mediators, which does not occur often in the unstable Balkan area. I will remind you, that only a decade ago, we have succeeded to renew our independence in a peaceful and democratic way in referendum. - President of the Parliament of Montenegro said at the European Conference in Strasbourg.
