The NATO Secretary General, Mr Anders Fogh Rasmussen, spoke on the future of cooperation between the European Union and NATO. Pointing out the global security challenges and reminding on the problems of reduction of budgetary allocations for the field of defence in member states, he highlighted the need for strengthening capacities, but also uniting and sharing the existing resources with a view to achieving the most efficient results possible. In accordance with the previous statements, he pointed out the significance of investment and building of strong structure in the European Union and NATO, and he reminded on the significance of maintaining a strong partnership between the two organisations, having in mind sharing of common values. In continuation, he pointed out the need to build a functional defence market in Europe and emphasised that cyber defence and security were the top priority of the Alliance. With regard to resolving the situation in Syria, the Secretary General brought up the conventions on prohibition of use of chemical weapons, and pointed out that NATO was focused on long-term goals, and that the decision in this particular case which would lead to an expected solution must be of a political character with an all-encompassing approach.
Within the last day of the Conference, two workshops were organised on the topic of Eastern partnership and its strategic significance for the European Union, as well as the modality for overcoming the differences between ambitions and opportunities in this organisation, and all in the context of the upcoming meeting of the European Council.
During the discussion it was pointed out that cooperation with the neighbours in the East represented a strategic priority of the European Union, and that the processes of strengthening the rule of law, building institutions and observation of human rights in the neighbouring countries were supported. Apart from the previous statements, they also spoke of the necessity of finding a strategic approach in the field of defence funding, as well as the need for greater financial allocations in the member states for this sector. Additionally, the significance of promotion of civil capacities and the adoption of common operational standards and procedures was highlighted.
In the continuation they spoke of the amendments to the Rules of Procedure of the Interparliamentary Conference, as well as the proposed conclusions.
