Deputy Chairperson of the Security and Defence Committee Ms Snežana Jonica and member of the Committee Mr Obrad Mišo Stanišić participated in the seminar for MPs "21st Century Transnational Security Challenges: Role of the Parliament", held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, on 30 June and 1 July 2015.
At the gathering, organised by the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies, the participants, inter alia, discussed contemporary security challenges, and mechanisms at the national, regional and international level for timely action towards the fight against organised crime, illegal trade, corruption and terrorism. Additionally, during the continuation, a special attention was devoted to the role of parliaments in the reform of security and defence sector, situation in the field of energy security and the concept of rule of law and good management in this field.
Deputy Chairperson of the Security and Defence Committee Ms Snežana Jonica spoke within the panel on the role of parliaments regarding the application of the gender equality principle in the security and defence sector, and in her remarks presented activities conducted in Montenegro with regard to application of the United Nations Resolution 1325, pointing out the achieved progress but also experience in the last decades when the world has been facing a number of crises and fights, resulting in increased number of civil victims. Bearing in mind the aforementioned, as well as other factors influencing the frequent violations of human rights worldwide, and reminding that in armed conflicts today almost 90% of victims were civilians, primarily women and children, MP Jonica stressed the importance of active engagement and overall approach at the national level in the application of principles stipulated by the United Nations Resolution 1325. Furthermore, she pointed out to the importance of improving and developing regional and international cooperation of parliaments at the said level.
Aside from the representatives of the Parliament of Montenegro, members of parliaments fromEstonia, Armenia, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, and Moldova also participated in the seminar.
