Round table dedicated to use of police powers during the October protest gatherings in Podgorica

Members of the Security and Defence Committee participated

The Council for Civilian Control of Police Operations in cooperation with NGOs “Human Rights Action” and “Civic Alliance” today held a round table dedicated to use of police powers during the October protest gatherings in Podgorica.

Referring to previous protests in the Capital City and the activities of the Security and Defence Committee during that period, Chairperson of the Security and Defence Committee Mr Mevludin Nuhodžić said that the body which he chairs was constantly in session, and that the activities of the Committee were contributing to calming of tensions and analysis of the security situation.
“We called for honouring of principles of the rule of law and expressed full support to all competent institutions in ensuring consistent implementation of laws and preservation of rights guaranteed by the Constitution and freedoms of citizens, in accordance with their constitutional and legal authorisations”, said Chairperson Nuhodžić, adding that the Committee members had asked the subjects of parliamentary oversight to review the legality of certain undertaken measures and actions of individuals.

Chairperson Nuhodžić stressed that the Security and Defence Committee, within its competencies, would continue to follow and appreciate action of competent state authorities with regard to determining facts and correcting possible irregularities.

Members of the Security and Defence Committee Mr Obrad Stanišić, Mr Velizar Kaluđerović, and Ms Snežana Jonica participated in today’s gathering. In addition to them, the following also participated in the round table: representatives of Ministry of Interior and Police Administration, Supreme Public Prosecutor's Office, Council for Civilian Control of Police Operations, NGOs, Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms of Montenegro, as well as attorneys of the aggrieved citizens.
