Meeting of Members of the Committee with Thorsten Frei MP of Bundestag

Emphasized the importance of the Committee on European Integration in the negotiation process

Chairs of the Committee on European Integration Mr Slaven Radunović and Mr Zoran Srzentić, as well as member of the Committee Mr Danko Šarančić, met today with Mr Thorsten Frei, rapporteur for Montenegro in the Committee on Foreign Policy and Committee on the EU Affairs of German Bundestag.

During the meeting, German MP assessed current course of negotiation as successful and pointed out that Montenegro, in relation to states in the region, significantly progressed in terms of European integration process. He pointed out to the importance of the fact that the Parliament, and the Committee on European Integration as well, obtained significant place in the negotiation structure, and thus decisions relating to negotiation positions fully gain on strength and legitimacy.

Mr Fry assessed that he is particularly pleased with the fact, since he was informed by the host, that all previous discussions on the positions and other documents from the negotiation process resulted in a consensual decision-making, that the five negotiating positions changed in the way the Committee on European Integration proposed. The absolute concentration to the negotiation process and developments in the European Union, as well as the efficient resolving of outstanding issues that arise during the opening of negotiating chapters are the recipe for a successful continuation of European history, said Fry.

Pointing out to the high proportion of support in public for the European path of Montenegro, the Committee members assessed that great work has been done regarding the harmonization of national legislation, but that is necessary to strengthen the administrative capacity and the implementation of European standards for further progress. Strengthening the framework for investment and opening of new jobs are challenges that have special meaning in a time of economic crisis, that are facing Montenegro.

During the meeting, they also discussed about the recent constitutional changes, Montenegrin economic potential, the issues of corruption and organized crime, as well as the potential membership of Montenegro in NATO and the Ukrainian crisis.

The meeting was attended by Henri Bohnet Director of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Montenegro and Olaf Poeschke Charge d'Affaires of the German Embassy in Podgorica.
