In the absence of the Chairperson of the Committee on Human Rights and Freedoms due his official businesses, the event was attended by representatives of the Committee’s professional service.
Comic book “Troubles with Rocky and other stories about children’s rights” is a product of the project “Children write to the Ombudsman!”, jointly implemented in two-year period by the Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms of Montenegro and NGO Human Rights Action (HRA), and supported by UNICEF, the Swiss Embassy based in Belgrade and British Embassy based in Podgorica.
The comic book consists of five parts, designed on the basis of the most common topics that children from all over Montenegro have written to the Ombudsman: discrimination particularly on the basis of disability and social class, teachers' violence against children, lack of involvement of children in decision-making process related to them.
In December 2013, the National Bureau for Education approved the comic book for use in primary schools as teaching aids in the subject Civil education, which is being an innovation in Montenegro’s education system and it’s also a rarity in the world.
The following addressed the attendants: Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms of Montenegro Mr Šućko Baković, Assistant Minister of Education Ms Vesna Vučurović, Head of the UNICEF Office to Montenegro Mr Benjamin Perks, Ambassador of the Great Britain to Montenegro Mr Ian Viting, Director of the Primary School Ms Marijana Bošković and Director of the “Human Rights Action” Ms Tea Gorjanc Prelević
During the promotion, participants emphasised that the strip has been a product of unique cooperation and wider partnership among Ombudsman’s Office, civil sector-Human Rights Action, Government-Ministry of Education and international community-Embassy of the Great Britain, Embassy of Switzerland, UNICEF, while its particular value has been mirrored in the fact that the very initiative for making the comic book was children’s idea.
At the gathering, participants called children, together with other children, to become familiar with their rights, raise voice in fight for rights that belong to them and initiate the action so to become holders of changes.
