Visit of the Committee on Human Rights and Freedoms to Detention Unit in Podgorica

Committee on Human Rights and Freedoms of the Parliament of Montenegro, in accordance with its 2014 Activities Plan, will visit Detention unit in Podgorica, so called „Betonjerka“.

The visit is planned for 10 July 2014, starting at 11:30.

The Committee is engaged a longer period in monitoring the situation in the field of protection of rights of persons deprived of their liberty in prisons and detention units, and for preventing torture, the Committee reviewed even in 2011 the Special report on the state of premises of the Police Administration for detaining persons deprived of their liberty, which, at the request of Committee for Human rights and Freedoms, was submitted by the Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms of Montenegro. The Committee supported the recommendations of the Protector, contained in a Special report and it further fostered the Report with Conclusions.

In accordance with the control and oversight role, the Committee monitored the implementation of Conclusions and Recommendations given with the aim to improve the situation.

In addition to members of the Committee on Human Rights and Freedoms, the following were invited to visit „Betonjerka“: Director of the Police Administration Slavko Stojanović, Minister for Human and Minority Rights Suad Numanović PhD, Director General of the Directorate for Execution of Sanctions in the Ministry of Justice Slavica Rabrenović, Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms Šućko Baković and representative of NGO "Civic Alliance" Boris Raonić.
