In addition to Chairperson of the Committee on Human Rights and Freedoms Mr Halil Duković, the visit was also attended by Deputy Chairperson of the Committee Ms Ljiljana Đurašković and Committee members Ms Snežana Jonica and Mr Rešad Sijarić.
The visit was organised within the Work Programme of the XX generation of the School of Human Rights, attended by 29 secondary school students from all over Montenegro, and the Programme envisages the visits to institutions dealing with promotion and protection of human rights.
This is the second visit of attendees of the School of Human Rights to the Committee on Human Rights and Freedoms. Previously, on 3 February 2015, attendees of the XIX generation of the School visited the Committee, which is a testament to their interest in activities of this working body of the Parliament in promoting, protecting and enhancing human rights.
Chairperson of the Committee on Human Rights and Freedoms Mr Halil Duković informed the attendees of the XX generation of the School of Human Rights on competencies and numerous activities of the Committee implemented within the legislative and control role of the Parliament, with special reference to activities implemented in the previous year. He highlighted the importance of monitoring the implementation of the laws through the oversight and control function of the Parliament. He pointed out the very good cooperation with the Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms of Montenegro, competent authorities, international organisations based in Montenegro and the NGO sector.
Following the presentation of the work of the Committee on Human Rights and Freedoms, the Chairperson of the Committee answered the questions posed by the attendees of the School relating to the state of human rights in Montenegro, successes of this working body, cooperation of the Committee with the organisations dealing with protection of human rights, providing access to the building of the Parliament for persons with disabilities, as well the proposal for awarding life-time monthly compensation for working women who give birth to three or more children.
Executive Director of the Centre for Civic Education Ms Daliborka Uljarević expressed pleasure over the fact that the presenting of certificates to the attendees of the School of Human Rights was happening in the Parliament, because precisely the legislative power had the most significant role in promoting values and protection of human rights and freedoms. She highlighted that any effort bringing us closer to the culture of human rights was valuable and she pointed out that young people represented a significant generator of change.
Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy to Montenegro Mr B. Bix Aliu said that no citizen was ever too young to advocate for the human rights and expressed expectation that the attendees of the School of Human Rights would apply the acquired knowledge in practice.
At the very end, the ceremonious presenting of certificates to the attendees of the XX generation of the School of Human Rights was held. The certificates were presented by: Chairperson of the Committee on Human Rights and Freedoms Mr Halil Duković, executive director of the Centre for Civic Education Ms Daliborka Uljarević and Mr B. Bix Aliu, Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy to Montenegro.
