With the final session, chaired by the Minister of Tourism of the Republic of Croatia, Darko Lorencin, First Inter-Parliamentary Conference on "Challenges of Sustainable Tourism: Promotion of cultural heritage and environmental protection", was completed, held in Zagreb and Mali Lošinj, in the period 10 - 13 September 2014. The Conference was attended by Predrag Sekulić, Chairman of the Committee on Tourism, Agriculture, Ecology and Spatial Planning.
Inter-Parliamentary Conference, the first of this type, organized by the Croatian parliament, gathered more than 170 participants from 26 countries and international organizations.
Inter-parliamentary Conference on "Challenges of Sustainable Tourism: Promoting Cultural Heritage and Environmental Protection", that was opened in Zagreb, continued in Mali Lošinj with presentations given by representatives of state institutions and with panel discussions. During panels at the conference, speeches were given by Gari Kapeli, the mayor of Mali Lošinj, Hrvoje Marušić, Assistant Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Croatia, Đurđica Šimičić, Director of the Tourist Organisation of Mali Lošinj, Jasen Mesić, a member of the Croatian Parliament and a member of the Committee on Tourism, Dijana Katica, external member of the Committee for Tourism and Dora Smolčić Jurdana, external member of the Committee on Tourism and the Dean of the Faculty of Tourism Management in Opatija.
Presentations were given by representatives of the "Blue World" Institute, engaged in the research of whales and dolphins and the representative of the Ministry of Culture, who spoke about the project in the field of culture "Croatian Apoxiomen".
During the Conference, the importance of regional cooperation was highlighted, both for the development of tourism, and for the very process of European integration. It was pointed out that the cooperation in the field of tourism, environmental protection and preservation of cultural heritage needed to be improved, which was an excellent framework for all future activities in these areas. It was pointed out that the environment was a precondition for development of tourism, that it must be an active component in the development of tourism and primarily to serve the local community. Also, it is necessary to emphasize the importance of the cultural heritage in tourism development and branding of destinations, preservation of cultural identity and gastronomy. To achieve these goals, all tourism activities must be based on the principles of sustainable development.
It was concluded that in the next 60 days recommendations and conclusions of this conference be prepared, which will be referred to all the member states and the European Parliament. It was also decided that the Conference be traditional and it was agreed that the host of the next Inter-parliamentary Conference be Greece.
